A question for the lazy web: rain barrels, soaker hoses, and water pressure

In Uncategorized on May 2, 2011 at 12:47 am

We finally got around to getting some rain barrels, and since it was raining when we brought them home, I figured I'd take advantage of the occasion and get them set up and under the downspouts right away.

A good thing too since the little light rain that we had nearly filled one barrel and had the other at least to 3/4 full. That tells that as we enter the real rainy season here, I'm very short on rain catchment (or is it cachement – google is unsure) capacity, but it also raises a related question that inspired my lazy web request. Our barrels have the standard "hook a hose up here" attachment at the end, and ideally what I'd like to do is connect up one or more of the soaker hoses that we've got snaked around the garden. What I'm not sure about is whether I have enough water pressure from the barrel for the hose concept to actually work, or if what I need to do is build a platform for my barrels so that I get a bit of a lift from gravity.

Anyone know how to figure such things out? If I come to realizing that I need more pressure, but don't want to build a platform, what kind of manual pumping options exist?

Anyone got advice and experience to share?
